SAANS TYPEFACE
SAANS, translated from Urdu as the breath, is a
venture into typography which surrenders control in
design, demonstrated through the font’s movements
shaped by the diverse collected gestures of others.
It represents an exploration of the collective meaning
of a subconscious action, where the creative process
is guided by the spontaneous expressions of the
concept of breathing.
Through typographic design, SAANS aims to encapsulate the simplicity of a subconscious human action: breathing. The inspiration originated from the act of moving a printed phrase along the scanner resulting in distortion which authentically reflected the nuances of motion. Instead of digitally or manually distorting the shape, Alina Mufti allowed the scanner to organically determine the final form. This approach embraced a natural and uncontrolled evolution, resulting in a visual representation that echoed the genuine essence of the subject. Building upon the concept of relinquishing control, Alina decided to delve deeper into this approach by creating a font. The process consisted of inviting individuals to express their interpretation of the act of breathing through hand gestures. Subsequently, she scanned an established minimal typeface (Helvetica), while manipulating the page to incorporate the collected hand gestures and movements. The resulting distorted scans served as the foundational elements for the typeface.
